John Mark Rowles

April 27, 1949 — July 16, 2016

Dr. John Mark Rowles, 67, died on July 16, 2016 at his home in Atlanta. Mark was born April 27, 1949 in Cambridge, Maryland to Rev.James R. Rowles, Jr. and Ruth Linger Rowles. He grew up in Halifax and Roanoke, Virginia and Hickory, North Carolina. Mark attended Duke University and University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill Medical School where he earned his MD as well as his Masters of Public Health. He married his high school friend, Ann Weaver, in 1971 and had one son, Matthew.

Mark served as a Corpsman in the US Navy Reserve from 1970 to 1974. He was stationed at Oak Knoll Naval Hospital in Oakland, California 1971-73. Mark and Ann moved back to Durham, NC in 1975 and lived there 20 years before moving to Atlanta in 1995. His last employment was as the Medical Director for MHM Services, Inc. providing Mental Health services for the Georgia Department of Corrections. Mark was a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He truly dedicated his life to helping others.

Mark was preceded in death by his father, James R. Rowles Jr. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ann W. Rowles; son Matthew Mark (Heather) Rowles; favorite grandson James Afton Rowles; mother, Ruth L. Rowles; and brothers, The Rev. S. Paul (Cynthia) Rowles and Timothy (Kathy Cox) Rowles.

Mark loved his family and his favorite activities always included them. He loved gardening, good food, good music and was a great supporter of the arts in Atlanta. He was a proud member of the choir at The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany. Mark especially adored his grandson Afton.

Services will be held at The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, Thursday July 21, 2016 at 4pm with a reception following in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, Mark's family asks that donations be made to Multi-Agency Alliance for Children (MAAC), 225 Peachtree Street, Suite 900, Atlanta, GA 30303; The Church of the Epiphany music program, 2089 Ponce De Leon Avenue, NE, Atlanta, GA 30307; or Trees Atlanta, 225 Chester Avenue, SE, Atlanta, GA 30316.
