John Robert Howard

January 29, 1911 — January 26, 2005

John Robert Howard, a Presbyterian minister, died January 26, 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was 93. He held pastorates in La Grange, Georgia (Lloyd Presbyterian Church), Tifton, Georgia (First Presbyterian Church), Whitesburg, Kentucky ( Graham Memorial ), and Mt. Sterling, Kentucky ( First Presbyterian). He was known for his outreach to poorer parts of the community, building missions and providing community services. He was a graduate of Boys High in Atlanta, Davidson College and Columbia Theological Seminary. While at Davidson, he was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa, and the recipient of the Algernon Sidney Sullivan award. His wife, Charlotte Stewart Howard, died in 1999. He is survived by three sons, their wives and eight grandchildren: John Allen Howard, an attorney in Atlanta, his wife, Jane S Howard, and their children, John Allen Howard Jr. and Charles Thornton Howard; James Robert Howard, an attorney in Atlanta, and his children, Robert Jordan Howard and Whitfield Jordan Howard; Philip King Howard, an attorney and author in New York, his wife, Alexandra Cushing Howard, and their children, Olivia Sabine, Charlotte Howard, Lily Howard, and Alexander Howard. A graveside service will be held at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia, on Monday, January 31st at 11A.M. A. S. Turner & Sons
