John Thomas Guy

Mr. Guy was born in the Oakhurst community in Decatur, Ga.. He was predeceased by his parents, sister, Mrs. Geraldine Guy Kiker, brothers Emmett J. Guy Jr. and Robert Weyman Guy, and step-mother Mrs. Susie Verner Guy. He was a member of Tazewell United Methodist Church in Marion County, Ga. He was affiliated with Thunderbolt Lodge No. 693 FandAM and the York Rite Bodies of Savannah, Georgia, the Yaarab Shrine and a member of the Peach Officer's Association of Georgia, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He graduated from Oakhurst Grammar School (1933), Decatur Boys High (1937) and the University of Georgia - BBA (1949). In 1940, he joined the National Guard known as the Governor's Horse Guard as the unit was being mobilized as the 101st Automatic Anti -Aircraft Battalion. The unit was in training at Camp Stewart from February 1941 until February 1942 when it was dispatched to Papua, New Guinea by way of Boston, the Queen Mary and Australia. The Unit was the first U. S. ground combat forces in New Guinea. He returned to the United States in October, 1944 and was discharged as a Cpl. from the service in August, 1945 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. In 1939 he was employed by the United States Post Office in Decatur, Georgia. After eight years of military service and college attendance, in 1949 he was employed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), United States Treasury Department, as a Special Agent, stationed at Jasper, Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia, retiring at Atlanta in December of 1977.
