Joseph Mccabe

February 18, 1918 — January 17, 2014

Joseph McCabe, age 96, of Avondale Estates, GA, passed away January 17, surrounded by family and friends. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 21 at 2:00 pm at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Decatur, GA. Mr. McCabe was born in New Orleans, LA. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and the Korean War. He was active in many organizations: past president of the Atlanta Lions Club, the Avondale Men's Club, and the Avondale Estates Community Club; long-time member of the Harold Byrd American Legion Post #66 where he served as chaplain for many years. He was a thirty-five year member of East Lake Golf Club, where he made a hole-in-one at the sixth hole when he was in his early 80's. He was especially proud of a photo in Golf Digest showing him playing on the course. Equal to his love for golf was his love for flowers, exchanging plants with the neighbors, and taking in 'stray' plants and bringing them back to health. Mr. McCabe is survived by his wife of 66 years Kathryn; daughter Pam Burkhart and sons Joe, Robert, and Patrick; sons-in-law Quint Burkhart and Barry Cazaubon, daughters-in-law Anne McCabe and Dara McCabe; grandchildren Marisa, Josh, Kimberly, and Jordan; five great-grandchildren Caleb, Noah, Brylee Anne, Easton, and Elijah; and dear friends Joan Lass and Sarah Zimny. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
