Labibie Azar

April 23, 1914 — April 24, 2016

On April 24, 2016, one day after her 102 birthday, Labibie Domain Azar passed on to the next life. There she is now with the Lord and those loved ones who passed before her: her father and mother, Michael and Martha Domain; her husband Sam; her sisters Maggie Fakouri, Sarah Domain, Frances Najour; her brothers Abraham Domain, Nicholas Domain and Joseph Domain. She is survived by one loving sister, Karemy Jacobs; her children, Jackie, John, Gary and Dana; her grandchildren, Elizabeth (and Elizabeth's husband, Ken), and Lisa; and her great grandchildren, Ryan and Alex, all of whom were devoted to her. For over 15 years Labibie was cared for at home, supported in large part by ever-loyal and loving Jackie, John and Gary.
Labibie was an uncommonly strong, high-spirited, independent woman, long before being a strong woman was fashionable. Among her many daring acts as a young girl and adolescent, she climbed the steep, forbidden side of Stone Mountain and "borrowed the family car" (unbeknownst to her father), running the car over a street car rail track. As a young mother, when young thieves stole her sons' bicycles, she single-handedly tracked them down and retrieved the bicycles. The police congratulated her.
Labibie's parents were immigrants, therefore, she grew up with few advantages. Despite that, Labibie was fiercely proud. She took her "few advantages" and forged a life that others with greater advantages could not rival. Her natural strength was buoyed by her faith and prayer. She was a dedicated wife and mother who ensured by her own common sense, hard work, self-sacrifice and example that the many needs of her four children were met. The children were raised in a loving, clean, close, stable, disciplined and moral environment which included grandparents, uncles and aunts who loved her children as their own. She was active in her children's school lives, acting as PTA president, volunteering in the band and participating in other volunteer activities. She was elected treasurer for the City of Atlanta's Council for the PTA.
When her youngest child no longer needed a full time mother, Labibie decided to teach. She worked with students from pre-school to high school. During the many years which ensued, many times, teachers from an advanced grade would tell her, "We can always tell which students were in your class because they are doing better academically." The principal of the school, who had been the principal of the school for three of her four children, placed tremendous value on her contribution. She was asked to participate in a program funded by Ford Motor Company, to nominate teachers to receive Ford funded grants.
Labibie baptized and raised her children in St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Church, the Church at which her father was one of the founding members. She will be laid to rest at the same Church, surrounded by people whose parents and grandparents had known and loved each other and who know and love Labibie and her family. Her contribution to the lives of her family, particularly her children and grandchildren, cannot be overstated.
The family will receive visitors at St. Elias, 2045 Ponce de Leon Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia 30307 on April 27, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until noon; the funeral service will begin at noon.
