Linda E. Saltzman

September 8, 1949 — March 9, 2005

It is with great sadness that the family of Linda Saltzman announces her sudden passing on March 7, 2005. Since 1984, she has worked as a specialist in the prevention of intimate violence for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. After graduating from University High School in Bloomington, Indiana in 1967, she went on to Brown University where she graduated with honors in 1971. She earned a Ph.D. in Criminology from Florida State University, and then served on the faculty at Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota, before moving on to CDC. Her work at CDC focused on prevention of family and intimate partner violence, sexual violence, public health surveillance of violence against women, and violence as it relates to pregnancy and other reproductive health issues. Linda had worked on the development and pilot-testing of uniform definitions for intimate partner violence and sexual violence. As a well-recognized expert in violence prevention, Linda provided consultation to federal and state health officials across the country and to researchers and violence practitioners, both nationally and internationally. A press release from the CDC this week referred to Linda as "a visionary in championing violence prevention efforts and she will be greatly missed." Linda was the co-author of approximately 100 articles and 9 book chapters on Intimate Partner Violence. She also taught as an adjunct professor in the Emory School of Public Heath. She was an accomplished ballroom dancer, a 5 year participant in the Jazzercize program, and a patron of the Arts at the High Museum, Marietta Theater in the Square, Atlanta Shakespeare Tavern, the Emory Concert Series, and the Alliance Theater. She is survived by her loving partner Charles J. Weeks, Jr. of Marietta, Georgia, her mother Dorothy Saltzman of Bloomington, her sister Nancy Saltzman of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and her brothers Robert Saltzman of Los Angeles, California, and Andrew Saltzman of Evansville, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Irving J. Saltzman Scholarship fund established in memory of Linda's late father, c/o Indiana University Foundation, 1500 N. Bypass, Bloomington, IN 47408 or to Marietta Theater In The Square, 11 Whitlock Ave., Marietta, GA 30064. A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 17th at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church. The family will receive friends after the service. A. S. Turner & Sons
