Margaret Doris Godfrey

October 6, 2012 — October 9, 2012

Margaret Ingram Godfrey died peacefully on October 9, held by her beloved husband of 61 years, Reuben Hearn Godfrey, and surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Margaret was born on October 6, 1925, in Longview, Texas, to Bessie Dee Smelley and James Clark Ingram. She was raised in Spring Creek, Alabama with her three sisters, Jimmie Dee, Betty Carolyn, and Marion Rebecca, all of whom pre-deceased her.

Margaret and Reuben married in 1951. Margaret was a loving and inspiring mother to her three children. She and Reuben joined North Decatur Presbyterian Church in 1962, where she taught Sunday school for many years. A person with a tremendous desire to serve others, Margaret earned a BA and an MAT from Georgia State University, and in 1973, began an almost 20-year career teaching remedial math at Avondale High School. After retiring, she spent many happy and fulfilling hours helping to raise (and feed) her grandchildren. All her life, Margaret loved her family, books, music, nature, and knitting.

Margaret is survived by her husband, three children and their spouses, David Stephen Godfrey and Nancy Kay Porteous of Atlanta, Annie Mae Godfrey and John Lewis Kittle Jr. of Decatur, and Carolyn Elizabeth Godfrey and Harold Bailey Prince of Palo Alto, California; grandchildren and spouse Amelia Thompson Godfrey of Atlanta, Andrew Fort Godfrey-Kittle and Mary Elizabeth Root of Atlanta, Sallie Lynn Godfrey-Kittle and James Ingram Godfrey-Kittle of Decatur, James William Prince and Reuben Harold Godfrey of Palo Alto, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at North Decatur Presbyterian Church at 10:30 AM Friday, October 12 with Reverend David Lewicki officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to North Decatur Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends Thursday, October 11 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at A.S. Turner & Sons in Decatur.
