Margaret Housworth Shofner

September 23, 1918 — July 20, 2009

Virginia H. Shofner passed away July 20, 2009. She was born September 23, 1918, the daughter of Evan H. Housworth and Flonnie May Robertson Housworth.  In 1935, she graduated from Girls High in Atlanta. On February 20, 1943, she married William S. Shofner at Peachtree Christian Church.  He went off to war shortly afterwards and she worked at Sears on Ponce de Leon.  After a short stay in Baltimore after the war, they moved to East Point and she worked in the office of Colonial Stores.  Her husband was transferred a number of times but she always insisted on regular trips back to Atlanta where she had three brothers and three long time girlfriends; Louise, Helen and Francis.  When her husband retired, they moved back to Atlanta where they had many happy years until he died in 1999.  Virginia wrote in a journal, “Bill died on Nov 29, 1999.  I have known him since I was 18; we were married for 56 years and I have lost the love of my life.  I will miss him for the rest of my life.”  In her final 10 years she had regular lunches with her old friends, doted on her grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and missed her husband. She is survived by her son, William, Jr.; two grandchildren, Melinda and Rob; two great grandchildren, Maia and Max; and two brothers; Jack and Kenneth Housworth. A funeral service will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 23rd.  Burial will be in Arlington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to Hospice Atlanta, 1244 Park Vista Dr., Atlanta, GA  30319. The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 prior to the service on Thursday. A. S. Turner & Sons
