Dr. Bashor, 74, of Decatur, GA died peacefully on January 6, 2020.
Mark was born on December 15, 1946 in Elizabethton, Tennessee, son of the late David Earl Bashor and Roberta Bashor.
Mark received his PhD at Vanderbilt University, and began his career at CDC in 1977. Mark started his career at CDC under the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Then Mark transitioned to role of Vulnerable Populations Officer where he identified the most at risk people for illness and injury. Mark met Katie in Atlanta, and the two were married in 1983. Mark and Katie had two children: Ryan Bashor, born in October 1984, and Jessie Bashor, born in 1987.
In 1979 Mark and a group of like-minded individuals started what has become Central Night Shelter. Being very influenced by the Civil Rights Movement, Mark had always felt strongly and compassionately toward urgent and societal needs. His passion and advocacy to social justice and mercy has inspired and motivated others through works with allied organizations. The actions and gifts of both Mark and Katie have been recognized through countless awards, inspiring others toward work with the homeless.
Survivors include his daughter Jessie Bashor, son-in-law Cathal Doyle, grandson Liam Doyle, granddaughter Nealon Doyle, of Atlanta Georgia; daughter-in-law Rachael Bashor, granddaughter Jocie Bashor, grandson Owen Bashor, of Irmo South Carolina. In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his wife Katie Bashor, son Ryan Bashor, brother David Bashor, and sister Deborah Ledford. Service details to follow in light of COVID-19.
