Mary Charles Surber

Mary Charles Surber went peacefully to be with the Lord on April 27, 2013. She was born in Maryville, Tennessee on March 5, 1925 to Victor Ambrose Burchfield and Mexie Carringer Burchfield. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Lawrence Lovell Surber, and Everett Linscott, and by her sons, Larry Hugh Fox and Robert Michael Fox. She graduated from Maryville High School in Maryville, Tennessee in 1942 and attended one year of study in Business Administration at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Even though she was unable to finish her college degree, she was an avid learner and completed numerous professional courses over the years. She began her career as supervisor and claims examiner at the Boston Insurance Company in Atlanta, Georgia from 1954 - 1964. She then became the Administrative Assistant with the Fred S. James and Co. Inc. in 1964. Because of her competence, hard work, and cooperative spirit, she was promoted to Assistant Vice President before her retirement. She was a faithful member of Peachtree Baptist Church for more than 50 years. Community service was an important part of her life as she served 25 years in the Civitan Club and was vice president for several of those years. Her passion was volunteering for the Andrew P. Stewart Center and she volunteered for many years as the secretary and treasurer when the organization began in 1996. She is survived by a daughter, Vicki Fox Ashby of Decatur, Ga., son, Lester Patrick Surber and wife Paula Surber of San Jose, CA, and a son, Lawrence Lovell Surber, Jr. of Douglasville, Georgia. She is survived by 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was often described as a strong woman and had an amazingly wonderful spirit despite the many challenges she faced. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. A memorial service, celebrating her life, is scheduled for 11 a.m. at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, on Saturday, May 4, 2013.
