Melvin E. Wooton, Jr. passed away on February 20, 2009 at the age of 86 at his residence, Canterbury Court, in Atlanta. Ga. He was born on November 4, 1922 in Bloomington, Indiana. Mr. Wooton has lived in Atlanta since 1985 with his wife, Betty, until she passed away August 21, 1993. Mr. Wooton retired from his alma mater, Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida where he was a professor for 25 years and head of the Drama Department and his students, The Vagabonds. Mr. Wooton also served as the Advisor of the social fraternity, Theta Chi, where he endeared himself to hundreds of young men over the years. Mr. Wooton was the guest of honor at the fraternity's reunion in 2004 and was honored by his beloved Vagabonds. In Atlanta, Mr. Wooton made many friends through Senior University, where he became a professor. He and Betty organized and led several field trips and cruises for Senior University participants. Mr. Wooton was preceded in death by his wife, the former Betty Ann Green and his sister, Nancy Ruth Quillian. He is survived by his brother, James F. Wooton of Holts Summit, MO and sister-in-law, Alice Smith Wooton. According to Mr. Wooton's wishes, no services will be held.
