Michael Andrew Cumbie, Major, U.S. Army

Major Michael A. Cumbie passed away peacefully on January 29, 2020 surrounded by his family and friends.
Born and raised in Wetumpka, Alabama, he traveled the world with his career in the Army, his later career as an I.T. project manager, and for his own enjoyment, making friends wherever he went.
His deep sense of duty, natural leadership abilities and desire to serve led him to join ROTC at Auburn University. He served ten years in the Army immediately after graduating with a B.S. in Business Administration and Finance. He served tours in Kuwait and Iraq during the Iraq War along with posts throughout the United States.
After his retirement from the Army, he served as a crew chief in the Montana Conservation Corps. He loved the natural beauty of the West and working and living on the land, but especially the commaraderie of fellow veterans.
MIchael moved to Atlanta to work as a project manager for Athena Health, and later RouteMatch, and enjoyed working with his teammates.
He commemorated the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy and paid his respects to fellow veterans when he planned a whirlwind adventure to Belgium, France and England.
He always made time for friends and loved to be outdoors whether it was hiking the Grand Canyon, hunting deer and riding ATVs in Texas, or just roaming the woods around his parents’ home in Wetumpka.
While Michael was pragmatic and independent, he had a generous spirit and great sense of humor. He was a loyal friend and an excellent brother and son, and in his own calm, efficient manner was always looking out for others. He loved children, especially his nieces and nephews.
He is survived by his parents, Richard and Becki Cumbie, Wetumpka, Ala.; sister Haley Cumbie, Montgomery, Ala.; brother Jeremy Cumbie, sister-in-law Julia Allred Cumbie and nieces and nephews Henry, Reid, Georgia and Susanna Cumbie, St. Petersburg, Fla., as well as aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
