Michael Edwin Furtado

May 13, 1961 — May 9, 2021

Michael Furtado died Sunday, May 9, 2021 from heart failure and cancer. Mike, my brother, was born May 13, 1961 on Mother’s Day and died on Mother’s Day. He was 59 years of age.
Mike, son of Ed and Lynn Furtado and brother of Kevin Furtado, was a kind soul. He grew up in the Bay Area of California and was the oldest son and my baby brother. He was a good guy, star athlete in high school, playing basketball on the varsity team as a freshman. He attended San Jose State University. He was married for 13 years and lived in Oregon. He loved spending time in the woods up there. After his divorce he moved to Georgia to be near his family.
Mike went to school in Georgia to become a certified mechanic and worked as an automotive technician. He also worked for many years for Senior Connections, a nonprofit that provided meals to seniors. Mike was an affable person and dedicated to helping others. His clients loved interacting with him each day. He had such a love for travel and enjoyed driving – he could drive any vehicle – he decided to pursue his commercial driver’s license. Recently he worked for Courier Connections, a distribution company, and delivered items to commercial customers.
His love of sports was contagious! He seemed to know sports history like no one else, except his dad, and was a huge fan of football, basketball and baseball. He remained dedicated to his California teams – especially the SF 49ers, Golden State Warriors and SF Giants. He pulled for the Atlanta Braves and Falcons except when either team played his beloved SF teams. He enjoyed attending UGA Bulldog football games with his sister even though he often gave his honest feedback of the Dawgs much to the chagrin of his sister.
Mike was known as a gentle giant, helping others whenever needed. He loved his family and was called upon as the family mover – helping all of us move many times and his physical strength and ability to pack a vehicle was amazing. He continually offered to help others as well.
Knowing Mike was to know someone who had an infectious smile and laugh. He liked to talk to people, anyone, and could talk about anything, but if you talked sports, be prepared to listen: he could talk forever.
Mike leaves his parents, sister, brother, sister-in-law, Nicki and his niece, Brittany as well as his loving extended family in California. He will be missed every day. Go in peace, Mike.
Debra Furtado, loving older sister
