Michael Floyd Hampton

Michael "Mike" Floyd Hampton, 65, of Valdosta died Friday Jan. 27, 2012 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia after a brief struggle with brain cancer. He was born on Jan. 14, 1947 in Moultrie to the late Tom and Irene Hampton and raised, along with his brothers and sister, in Lanier County. Mike graduated from Lanier Country High School. He married Patricia Delores Slack of Valdosta and the couple had one daughter, Gina, and one son, Michael. Mike served in the US Army from 1969 to 1972. After an honorable discharge from service, he completed his undergraduate accounting degree at Valdosta State College. Throughout the 1970's and 80's, he expanded professionally from working as controller for different organizations in Valdosta to owning and operating his own enterprises. In 1992, Mike began a long period of public service as a CPA. He retired in 2008 from his role as financial examiner from the State of Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. He is survived by a daughter, Gina Hampton, son, Mike Hampton, granddaughter, Mia Irene Hampton, sister, Patricia Brown, brother, Gerald Hampton, and several in-laws, nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces. His immediate family who passed before him includes his father, Tom, his mother Irene, and his brothers, Thomas and James. The family has honored his request for cremation. A memorial service will be held Saturday Feb. 25, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Berrien County. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Chris Elliott Fund for Glioblastoma Brain Cancer Research at www.chriselliottfund.org, or to an animal shelter of your choice.
