Mildred Westlund Montgomery

Mrs. Mildred Westlund Montgomery, age 90, of Decatur, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2008. She was the oldest child of Marie Alina ("Lena”) Williams Westlund and John Westlund, Finnish immigrants who settled in Bakersfield, California. Mrs. Montgomery worked for Pacific Bell Telephone during World War II in San Francisco, where she met her husband, Spencer Virgil Montgomery. While working for Pac Bell she was assigned to the first United Nations conference being held in San Francisco. She received the call from the Little White House to the Joint Chiefs of Staff that President Roosevelt had died. She later worked for many years and retired from the DeKalb County Health Department in the Administration Department. She was an amazing woman who will be deeply missed. Her sister, Evelyn Heber; and brother, Harold Westlund, both of Bakersfield, California preceded her in death. Mrs. Montgomery is survived by her daughter, Marie Cole and her husband Alan Cole; son, Michael Montgomery and his wife Janet Jansen Montgomery of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, also of Houston, Texas, Shain Montgomery and his wife Kim; Matthew Montgomery, Tricia Montgomery and Lindsey Montgomery; her brother-in-law, Dick Heber of Bakersfield, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, November 22, 2008 at The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 731 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, Georgia. Interment Decatur Cemetery.
