Nancy Roquemore

January 15, 1949 — May 16, 2007

Funeral services for Nancy Gwen Roquemore will be held 2 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2007, at Morningside Baptist Church with Dr. Robert Cleland officiating.  He will be assisted by William A. Whitley.  Interment will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery, Forest Park.   Nancy grew up in Forest Park and is a 1966 graduate of Forest Park Senior High.  She went on to college at Georgia Southwestern College, where she earned a master's degree in Library Science.  After graduation, she taught school and worked with the Clayton County Library before joining The Atlanta Journal-Constitution library-research department.  She soon was hired as copy editor for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Sunday Magazine and remained there until it was discontinued.  Nancy then joined the features section as a food editor.  She has also edited several cookbooks and worked as an independent copy editor after leaving the newspaper.   Longtime friend Jay Skinner, who works at The Colonnade Restaurant, remembers Nancy as a straight-forward, no-frills kind of person.  "She was exactly that.  I talked to her everyday for the last few years, and she was at every party we had.  We'd just plop her in the middle and let her direct traffic.   "We'd laugh, cuss each other out -- like sisters -- but we were always friends.  She never held back her opinions.  Once we were at a play at The Fox Theatre and some people in front of us kept getting up and going and coming back," Jay recalled, laughing.   "Finally, Nancy had had enough and in her big voice, she said, 'Do you think you're at a ballgame?'  Everybody heard her."   "I really miss her," Jay continued.  "I'm gonna miss calling her and hearing her answer the phone, 'Jell-o.'  She was one-of-a-kind."  Nancy was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Forest Park and was very active in the Order of Eastern Star.  She was a past Matron of the Forest Park Chapter.    Surviving Nancy are her mother, Helen Roquemore Cox of Alpharetta; one brother, Walter H. Roquemore; his wife, Cindy; and two nephews, Joshua and Tyler.  She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Lee Roquemore.  The family received friends A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, Decatur, Thursday evening.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice Atlanta.
