Nettie Lee Howard

Nettie Lee Greer Howard (Mrs. James C. Howard, Jr.) age 96, of Stone Mountain, GA passed away on September 7, 2014. Daughter of Nettie Lee Hollingsworth Greer and Carroll Theodore Greer, she was born May 6, 1918 in Atlanta, GA. Her love and caring for family, fellow human beings and all living things was evidenced in her joyful, radiant spirit and philanthropy. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, attorney Jimmy Howard, Jr. She is survived by her daughter Greer H. Reeves of Acworth; her daughter, Dr. Cary Howard and son-in-law George Vesely of Stone Mountain; her son, James C. Howard, III and daughter-in-law Ophelia Howard of Stone Mountain; sister, Marjorie Greer Howard of Atlanta; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She graduated with honors from North Avenue Presbyterian School in 1936, attended Agnes Scott College and graduated with an RN degree from DeKalb College in 1970. She taught Sunday School and Bible classes and served as President of the Women of the Church at both Druid Hills Presbyterian (her active membership) and Morningside Presbyterian, and received an Honorary Life Membership by Presbyterian Women. Across the years she was active in many leadership and service roles, including the PTA, Lions Club Auxiliary, Girl Scout leader, delivering Meals on Wheels, and visiting and caring for the sick. Nettie Lee was deeply spiritual and a peacemaker. Asked what was the secret to her happiness, she answered simply: I have no secret. You just decide to be happy. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons with Rev. Shelli Latham officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
