R. Theodore Smith

April 3, 1916 — February 5, 2007

R. Theodore Smith, age 90, passed away February 5, 2007. A life long resident of Atlanta and the Atlanta area, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Avondale Estates and formerly a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church of Decatur. He was a retired partner of McCurdy & Candler Law Firm of Decatur. He was a member of the State Bar of Georgia over 55 years. During World War II, he was a Navy musician, having been recruited to form the 6th Naval District Band in 1942 at the Charleston, S.C. Navy Yard. He was transferred to Newport, R.I., in March 1944, to the commissioning detail of the U.S.S. Wisconsin and was a member of the commissioning crew on April l6, 1944, of "The Last of the Big Battleships". He served upon her until the end of World War II. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Martha Barry Smith, and daughter, Andrea B. Smith, both of Decatur, and son, R Theodore Smith, Jr. of Knoxville, TN. He is predeceased by his youngest son, Isaac Barry Smith. Services will be held at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur on Thursday, February 8th; at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Clay Bowden and Rev. Alan Cochet will officiate. Interment will be at Decatur Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, February 7th, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at A. S. Turner & Sons.
