Reuben Hearn Godfrey

October 3, 1921 — January 14, 2015

Reuben Hearn Godfrey died peacefully on January 14, surrounded by his children. Born on October 3, 1921, in Society Hill, Alabama to Annie Mae Hearn and Reuben R. Godfrey, Reuben joined the U. S. Army and served from September 18, 1940 to December 24, 1945. After the war, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Auburn University. Shortly after graduating, he began his career as an auditor and manager at American Mutual Liability Insurance Company.

At American Mutual, Reuben met Margaret Ingram, and they married in 1951. He and Margaret joined North Decatur Presbyterian Church in 1962, where he served as an elder for multiple terms and helped manage church finances for many years.

After retiring, Reuben spent many happy and fulfilling hours helping to raise his grandchildren. While his family was always the center of his life, he also loved traveling, gardening, riding his bike, and reading.

Reuben was predeceased by his parents and by Margaret, his beloved wife of 61 years. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, David Stephen Godfrey and Nancy Kay Porteous of Atlanta, Annie Mae Godfrey and John Lewis Kittle Jr. of Decatur, and Carolyn Elizabeth Godfrey and Harold Bailey Prince Jr. of Palo Alto, California; grandchildren and spouses, Amelia Thompson Godfrey of Atlanta, Andrew Fort Godfrey-Kittle and Mary Elizabeth Root of Decatur, Sallie Godfrey-Kittle Owens and Taylor Reed Owens of Decatur, James Ingram Godfrey-Kittle of Mountain View, California, and James William Prince and Reuben Harold Godfrey of Palo Alto, California; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
