Dr. Richard A. Hudson

(April 14, 1960 - - November 20, 2022)

After a long and complicated struggle with multiple health issues; Dr. Richard A. Hudson (Doc Rick / Rick), age 62, passed away from Covid complications on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at his home in Atlanta, Georgia. With him at the time of his death were: his trusted Doberman rescue, Scooby; his devoted friend and companion, Frank; and a team of care giving nurses.

Rick was the youngest of three children born to Richard Hudson and Carol Patton Hudson (both deceased).

He is survived by his loving brother Mark Hudson and sister-in-law Yvonne Hudson of Grand Blanc, Michigan. Mark and Yvonne Hudson have two children, Scott Hudson and his wife Mandy Hudson (and their two children Brody and Owen) - - and - - their daughter Brittany Hudson Dwyer and her husband Ryan Dwyer (and their two children Mason and Liam).

Rick is also survived by his sister Lori Salsido and brother-in-law Rick Salsido of Armada, Michigan. Lori and Rick Salsido have two children, Shawn Carrie (and his three daughters, Megan, Makenna and Kaitlyn) - - and - - their daughter Sarah Wadowski and her husband John Wadowski (and their son Hunter).

Rick had many heroes. Three who he spoke about frequently were his Grand Mother Marie Hudson (deceased), Mother Theresa (deceased) and Dr. Ed Nix (deceased).

From his Grandmother Marie Hudson, Rick learned how to totally accept and love others for who they are.

From Mother Theresa, Doctor Hudson learned that no one (regardless of their religious belief or lack thereof) should ever go without health care and to take action - - personally, publicly and politically - - whenever needed to tear down boundaries on their behalf.

From Dr. Ed Nix, Rick learned to make peace with the destructive inner demons of the past and present.

At a very early age, Rick developed two passions that stayed with him throughout his entire life. An insatiable appetite for reading. Anything that he could get his hands on. And his love for all animals. It did not matter if they swam, flew, ran, borrowed or slithered.

Until his disabling in 2012, Doc Rick practiced Family Medicine for over 20 years at the Hudson Medical Group in Midtown Atlanta. As Rick's illnesses progressed, he chose not to share his pain with others and became a recluse.

Doc Rick was known as the doctor who was completely devoted to all of his patients. He had a well-deserved reputation, that lives on, for tearing down barriers to service on their behalf - - especially to the under-served or disadvantaged patients from the AIDS, Transgendered and Deaf/Deaf-Blind communities.

Two of Dr. Hudson's hobbies were collecting books and art work. He donated his incredible library and art collections to the University of Georgia's Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library and the University of Georgia Art Museum respectfully. His 17th Century through modern times library collection (of rare and original books, personal letters, unpublished and manuscripts) is the cornerstone of the UGA's LGBTQ+ studies. His art collection of paintings by both masters and local Georgia artists is on display at the Art Museum.

Rick and the deceased members of his family were remembered during a midnight Roman Catholic mass on Christmas Eve at St. Lawrence Church in Utica, Michigan.
