Rita Teresa Compher

Rita Teresa Taff Compher went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 20, 2010. Born in Lowell, MA on September 6, 1925, Rita was 85. She was the third of eight children of Edward and Mary Taff. She was married to Clarence William (Bill) Compher in 1946, her husband of 52 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill; her infant son Gary; three sisters and one brother. Rita is survived by many friends and family, her daughter Christine, son, Richard; granddaughters, Shannon and Valerie; great grandchildren, Bradley, Nicholas, Joaquin, Caitlyn and Journie will greatly miss the loving arms she held around her family. Rita a member of the Winding Woods Garden Club was a former President of the DeKalb County Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. and a former Director of the Redbud District of the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. For more than 20 years, she served on the board of the Garden Club of Georgia as a former officer and chairman of numerous committees, most recently as credentials and protocol chairman. She was a life member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., Deep South Region, and DeKalb Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc., where she was also recognized as Life Member of the Year. Her service as Director of the DeKalb Federation Garden Center at the Conservatory at Callanwalde, a post she held for over 20 years was her greatest garden club love. Rita also chaired numerous flower shows and was a leading force in most garden club endeavors, many county, district, state awards and scholarships have been given in her honor. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons located at 2773 North Decatur Rd., Decatur, GA. with Dr. Frank H. Crumpler officiating.
