Ruby Cheek Kirkland

Ruby Elizabeth Cheek Kirkland, 91, passed away on February 21, 2008. A native of DeKalb County, she was born October 25, 1916 to Ina Akin Cheek and James Lee Cheek and called the "Oak Grove Community" her home for nearly 90 of those years. Her parents owned and operated the Cheek Dairy and Store in the community for many years. She was a 1933 graduate of Druid Hills High School and life-long member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Decatur, GA. After the death of her husband, Robert Alexander Kirkland in 1958, she began a 30 year career in the residential building business. She was devoted to her family and truly served as the inspiration to many immediate and extended family members. In addition to her work at home, she enjoyed sewing and traveling around the country with her brothers and sisters. She is survived by her sons, Edward and Jean Kirkland of Atlanta; Dr. Robert and Donna Kirkland of Stone Mountain; daughter, Rebecca K. Lee of Atlanta; grandchildren, Bill and Liane Lee of Decatur, Ed Kirkland of Atlanta, Vallie Kirkland of Atlanta, Alex Kirkland of Nashville, Tn, and Ben Kirkland of Stone Mountain; great-grandchildren, Evan and Lauren Lee of Decatur; brother, Homer Lee Cheek of Decatur; sisters, Sara Jolley of Conyers, Eloise and Claud Pounds of Decatur, and Doris and Donald Nash of Decatur; many nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Charlotte Thompkins. Funeral Services will be held at Oak Grove United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 23 at 2 pm, Dr. Gil Watson and Rev. Glenn Ethridge officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery immediately following the service. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm on Friday evening at A.S. Turner & Sons.
