Ruth Eady Wheeler

Ruth Eady Wheeler of Decatur passed on 11/1/2014 at age 98. Originally from Crystal Springs, MS, she was born into a large, loving, farming family whose members, from parents and siblings to grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc., provided her with such
cherished memories that she took great joy in recounting stories of those years for the rest of her life. She would say of her childhood: It was a hard life, but a wonderful life. Graduating high school at the height of the Depression, her uncle, then head of Draughon School of Business, Atlanta, offered her an educational avenue. Upon completion she obtained work quickly, started her young adult life adventure, but vowing to stay an old maid unless the right man came along. Eventually, he did. In her words: 'the craziest man I'd ever met', Jake Wheeler, who at her request, took her to New York where they were married in 1943 at The Little Church Around the Corner, 1 E. 29th St., Manhattan Island. Two children followed: son Caley in 1946 and daughter Stacey in 1948, on which they doted while managing to instill the importance of personal responsibility and not spoiling them rotten! Ruth kept working until she was 79 because she enjoyed it, while still managing to travel to all the States and spots on the globe she had a desire to see. She was a lifelong member and participant in the Methodist Church, her later years spent at Decatur First contributing her time in many ways especially in the UMW. In later years she found gratification in the simplest of things: working up a sweat mowing her yard well into her 80's, curling up with a good book, or going for long car rides with her children that ended with a stop at Zesto for ice cream. If asked about her life's journey, she might laugh and say: I've done a lot for a little country gal from Mississippi. Preceded in death by her husband, his siblings, her parents Morris and Onie (Jones) Eady, seven siblings and grandson Bryan Wheeler Loftin. Survived by her children, sister Dorothy Eady Brown, brother Jack Eady and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers donations to Hospice Atlanta or Decatur First Methodist UMW would be appreciated. Visitation will be Thursday 11/6/2014 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. at A.S. Turner & Sons, 2773 N. Decatur Rd., Decatur, GA. Graveside services to follow at 2 PM at Decatur Cemetery.
