Samuel Lowell Wammock

November 27, 1934 — January 20, 2011

Samuel Lowell Wammock, "Lowell", died Thursday, January 20, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. Lowell was the son of Samuel Arlie Wammock and Johnnie Ricks Wammock. Born in Macon, Lowell grew up in Decatur and was a 1953 graduate of Decatur High School. He graduated from Auburn University where he played on the freshman football team. Two of his greatest passions were the Decatur Bulldogs and the Auburn Tigers. The last football game he watched was Auburn winning the National Championship. Upon graduation from Auburn, Lowell embarked on a life long career in commercial real estate. Lowell and his partner, Larry Morris, were responsible for a significant portion of the development of modern day Dunwoody, including Dunwoody Village. Lowell developed Shops of Dunwoody, Horseshoe Bend, Merchant's Walk and numerous other residential and commercial properties in North Atlanta. He was a true pioneer in Atlanta's real estate industry and a significant driver of Atlanta's growth in the 1960's and 1970's. Surviving are his son, Sam Wammock and daughter-in-law, Jackie Wammock; grandsons, Charlie Wammock and Connor Wammock; and a host of devoted friends and professional associates. The family would particularly like to thank the staff of the cardiac intensive care unit at St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta for their compassionate care and Lowell's many friends who remained loyal to him over the years. In lieu of flowers, well wishers are asked to send contributions to Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. A private family burial will be held later at Decatur Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons in Decatur. A reception will follow at Parkers on Ponce, 116 E. Ponce de Leon, Decatur.
