Sarah Lou Medford Johnston

July 15, 1912 — June 29, 2009

Sarah Lou Medford (Sally) Johnston, 96, passed away Monday, June 29, 2009, in Vistacare Hospice at Wesley Woods Center in Atlanta, Georgia.  Mrs. Johnston was born to the late Fred S. Medford and Martha Underwood Medford July 15, 1912 in Clyde, North Carolina.  She graduated Clyde High School, moved to Atlanta, and attended Georgia Baptist Nursing School.  Mrs. Johnston worked in private duty nursing in Atlanta for a number of years until she began her family.  Later in her life she returned to nursing as a Charter Member of the nursing staff at the opening of The DeKalb General Hospital in Decatur, Georgia.  She retired from the hospital in 1977 and began a second career in child care with Kiddie Kare Nursery in Decatur, Georgia.  Mrs. Johnston was a member of The Decatur First United Methodist Church, and also a long time member of the Paty Class.  Mrs. Johnston did volunteer work with the United Methodist Children’s Home in Decatur, Georgia.  Mrs. Johnston was married to the late William Posey Johnston, Jr. of Decatur, Georgia.  Mrs. Johnston was greatly loved and will be remembered  by her four children and their families:  in Atlanta, Georgia, Medford Johnston (wife Loraine), in Tucker, Georgia, Sylvia Johnston Vosburgh (husband Bob), in Acworth, Georgia, Frederick Johnston (wife Cindy), and in Clyde, North Carolina, Kim Johnston (wife Malinda); seven grandchildren: Greg and Andy Gunter, Charles and Randy Johnston, Audrey Johnston Fitzgerald, Joni Johnston Goldman, Abbey Johnston; five great grandchildren:  Nicholas Gunter, Jayson and Justin Johnston, Miles Johnston, and Owen Fitzgerald.  Funeral Services will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend David Naglee officiating.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Children’s Home, 500 South Columbia Drive, Decatur, Georgia  30030.   Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Tuesday, June 30, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, Georgia.
