Sarah Louise (Lucy) Morgan Clark

March 31, 1927 — August 14, 2012

Sarah Louise (Lucy) Morgan Clark of Stone Mountain, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died peacefully Tuesday, August 14th, surrounded by her loved ones. Lucy was born on March 31, 1927, in Saint Clair, GA, to Joseph Henry and Eunice Stitt Morgan. Her father, from Malone, AL, worked for the railroad for over 50 years as a Morse code operator. Her mother was from Bowden. Lucy graduated from high school in Augusta and attended nursing school and Augusta College before marrying Corbett Ward Clark of Atlanta of the U.S. Army. Together they explored the U.S. and Europe with their three daughters as he completed his military career. Lucy was a devoted wife and mother, making sure each move was a smooth transition by doing everything from making new curtains to sewing new clothes to watching her children participate in school, church, Girl Scouts, ballet and piano lessons, and other activities. After retiring from the Army, Corbett and Lucy made their home between Decatur and Avondale Estates. The family joined Columbia Presbyterian Church where Lucy and Corbett are still members. Lucy completed her B.S. in Math in 1966 from Georgia State University and began her teaching career at Clarkston High School. Lucy loved her five grandchildren and was active in their daily lives. She also attended their violin recitals, soccer games, musicals, and school and church programs. Lucy was happy to be able to attend the high school and college graduations of each grandchild. Lucy dedicated much of the last 10 years to taking care of her husband after he suffered heart attacks. Lucy's latest joys were the addition of five precious great-grandchildren. Seeing and holding them always brought a smile to her face. She was their Nana too. One of her favorite times of the year was Christmas when she decorated their home and celebrated with her growing family. She enjoyed reading; playing Bridge, Scrabble, and cards; and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Her favorite place was the beach where the grown children joined Corbett and Lucy with children of their own for many summers. She loved her long-time friends called the Dirty Dozen, her bridge clubs, and her church. She was an officer in the Women's Auxiliary of the VFW Chapter 5257, Stone Mountain, the Flintridge Forest Garden Club. Lucy was known for her thoughtfulness and devotion to everyone in her life. Lucy sustained serious injuries from a fall on June 14th. Lucy was predeceased by her parents, her brother Marion Wallace Morgan of Elmhurst, IL, and a sister Virginia Rosalee Morgan who died in childhood. Lucy is survived by her husband Major Corbett Ward Clark (U.S. Army, Ret.) of Stone Mountain; daughters Nancy Lee Clark of Fayetteville, NC; Margaret Ann Clark Fitzgerald (and husband Brian) of Suwanee; and Susan Jane Clark Meredith (and husband Mark) of Fayetteville, GA; her five grandchildren Michael Brian Fitzgerald (and wife Dovile nee Janulionyte) of Atlanta; Jonathan Clark Fitzgerald (and wife Susan nee Llanes) of Flowery Branch; Joseph Corbett Fitzgerald of Suwanee; Jennifer Clark Cook Scott of Wilmington, NC; Kelly Ann Meredith of Fayetteville, GA; and her five great-grandchildren Henry Clark, Miles Morgan, and Harper Jane Fitzgerald; Ema Alexandra Fitzgerald; and Rosalie Mildred Scott; her sisters-in-law Marcella Morgan of Elmhurst, IL; Mildred Clark Sargent of Pensacola, FL; and Inez Clark Nelams Windley of Virginia Beach, VA; many cousins, nieces, and nephews (and their families) throughout the United States, and friends who were as close as family to her. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, at 2:00 p.m. at Columbia Presbyterian Church with Rev. Tom Haygood officiating. Interment will be in Georgia National Cemetery in Canton on Monday, Aug. 20, at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers those desiring may send contributions to Columbia Presbyterian Church, 711 Columbia Drive, Decatur, GA 30030.
