Sarai Frances Cunningham

Following a progressive and lengthy illness, Sarai Frances Cunningham, 66, of Decatur, Georgia, formerly of Summerville SC, died peacefully in her sleep at home on February 19, 2013. Born August 15, 1946, in Queens, New York, she was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac Shelton of Hampton VA and Helen Shelton of Elizabeth City NC, as well as daughter, Brittany Nicole Cunningham of Charleston SC. Saria (also known as Fran by her family and friends) was an enthusiastic champion for education and teaching. Not only was she a devoted teacher and administrator for over 26 years in Dorchester County in Summerville SC and Charleston County in Charleston SC, she was also a college professor and tutor that positively influenced the lives of thousands of people. For Fran teaching was not a profession, it was an unwavering calling to spread the love of learning, to encourage endless curiosity and to help others pursue their life's dreams. Survivors include her daughters, Kecia Cunningham of Decatur, Vanessa Cunningham of New York NY, Christy Cunningham of Worchester MA, Dana Cunningham of Irvington NJ; son, Howard "D" Cunningham, Jr. of Knoxville TN; grandsons, Alexander Cunningham and Jackson Daly; sisters, Delores Roach, Elaine Rankin, Vedia Cooman and Iris McRae; three nieces and three nephews; companion, Steve Granbois; as well as her beloved dog, Maximilian (Max). Public services for Fran will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 23, 2013, in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons,.2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur GA 30033, with Rev. Kate Colussy-Estes officiating. She will be laid to rest at Decatur Cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends 6-8 Friday evening at A. S. Turner and Sons.
