Susan Lewis Whitfield, a retired chemist and longtime resident of Decatur, Ga., passed away peacefully at her home on April 11.
She was a native of Stony Creek, Va., and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University. After living in Northern Virginia and Kansas City, Mo., she moved to Decatur in 1983 and began a 25-year career with Georgia-Pacific Corp.
Susan was the daughter of the late James Russell Lewis. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Whitfield, of Decatur; her mother, Rebecca Thomas Smith Lewis, of Stony Creek; her aunt, Ethlyn T Lewis, of Stony Creek; her mother-in-law, Edith Whitfield, of Franklin, Va.; and many beloved cousins.
Visitation will be held Sunday, April 13, from 6 to 8 p.m. at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home at 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur, Ga.
A second visitation is planned at Owen Funeral Home, 303 South Halifax Road, Jarratt, Va., on a date to be announced.
The funeral service will be conducted on a date to be announced at Sappony Baptist Church in Stony Creek. The Rev. Jim Stone will officiate.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to Sappony Baptist Church, c/o Louise Bracato, 10048 Reed Road, Stony Creek, Va. 23882.
