Vernon E. Rossin

Vern, or Rocky as he was affectionately known, was born in Newark, NJ on February 17, 1950 to the late, Vernon E. Rossin, Sr. and Tomasina Garrett. Raised in Matawan, NJ, he acquired his love for sports, particularly basketball and shooting pool. Upon completion of high school, he attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. It was here that he met life-long friends and his future wife, Vera. In search of a new life, the young couple relocated to Los Angeles, CA and wed in Las Vegas on Christmas Day of 1972. They would eventually welcome two children into this union. After completing a B. S. degree in Business Administration - Marketing from California State University - Los Angeles, he began his professional work career in the area of insurance and pharmaceutical sales. In the early 80s, he began working at Delta Air Lines in Atlanta, a company which allowed him to travel the world. Rising quickly in positions of increasing responsibility, he ultimately became a Regional Manager in Corporate Real Estate. In 2005, Vern accepted an early retirement package to pursue a long-time ambition to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, particularly young adults. Returning to school, he obtained a Masters degree in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University and graduated with honors. Vern became a licensed counselor in the State of Georgia with national certifications, serving in private practice as well as U.S. military installations across the country. On Friday, December 28, 2012, Vern lost his 8 year battle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his loving mother, Tomasina Cox; devoted wife of 40 years, Vera; two children, Tara and Garrett; and a host of family members and friends. The memorial service will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until the service hour at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory
