VIRGINIA ACREE MATTHEWS

April 2, 1930 - September 15, 2009

Virginia Acree Matthews, 79, will be remembered by all who knew her as a loving and committed wife to Jack, and mother to her children.  She was a believer and committed Christian and follower of her Lord Jesus. Her life was defined by grace, strength and an unfaltering determination to overcome any of life’s obstacles that came her way.  When crisis would arise, it was Virginia’s resolute and faith that acted as the adhesive that held all things together.  Virginia was a gifted artist in porcelain and paints; and to the art of living life.  Many in Tucker Georgia and environs will recall the decades she stood alongside her husband Jack to establish Matthew’s Supermarket as one of the foremost grocers in the area.  She was a person of great value to the community and to her church, Peachtree Corners Presbyterian Church.

Most recent, many will call to mind how she and the entire Matthews family diligently and without any abate, worked hand in hand with the Holy Spirit restoring Jack to good health, even when the odds were stacked against them. Virginia Matthews was a native of Union Point Georgia until her family moved to the Oakhurst area of Decatur.  She was a product of both the Union Point schools and the Decatur City Schools. She lived 60 years in Tucker, and died at the family farm in Winder. At the time of her death, members of her family were with her. She has now joined for all time with the community of saints who have preceded her, her father, Willard Acree,  her mother, Ruth Acree, her sister, Helen Acree Campbell and her brother, Bill Acree.

She is survived by her husband Jack E. Matthews; children, Linda Matthews Murray, Thomas Steven Matthews, Richard Emerson Matthews, Marc Garrett Matthews; grandchildren, Chris Griffith, Cody Griffith, Brian Matthews, Michael Matthews; and their respective families; plus a host of nephews, nieces and cousins. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 19, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Peachtree Corners Presbyterian Church.   The Reverend Stephen T. Jackson and The Reverend John C. Dorr, Jr. will conduct the services. Interment Floral Hills Memory Gardens.  Family visitation will take place Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home 2773 North Decatur Rd., Decatur, GA  30031-4000
