Walter Gary Winsett

Walter Gary Winsett, age 71, passed away peacefully with his family at his side in Atlanta, Georgia, Saturday, November 2, 2013. Gary was born on April 6, 1942, in Huntsville AL. He graduated from Hazel Green High School in 1960, where he was elected as class president. He attended Auburn University, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho and Alpha Zeta fraternities and graduated with a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering in 1966. He served in the Alabama Army National Guard. Gary married Dianne Sauser on November 4, 1967, and they were married 46 years. He was a Professional Engineer and established his own company, Winsett Engineering, Inc., which he successfully operated for over 25 years, up until the time of his death. He was regarded as an expert in his field and was well-recognized for his unique and innovative feed mill designs. Gary was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Georgia Native Plant Society, Society of the Preservation of Old Mills, Crossroads Community Ministry, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and Botanical Society, and was highly active in the community. He had a special appreciation for trees and nature, and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He lived life to its fullest, always with a twinkle in his eye. Gary will be greatly missed by his wife, Dianne Sauser Winsett, of Atlanta; daughters, Julie Melissa (Adam Lipson) Winsett of Newton MA and Lisa Marie Winsett, of Panama City Beach FL; grandson, Samuel Jacob Lipson of Newton MA; mother, Imogene Moon Winsett of Hazel Green AL; brother, Dickey Ray Winsett of Hazel Green AL; nephew, Jonathan Harris Winsett of Atlanta; and numerous other family members and friends. A Memorial Mass will be held 11 am, Wednesday, November 6, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with a reception to follow. The family will receive friends beginning at 7 pm, Tuesday evening, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy, Georgia Native Plant Society, or Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
