William Deloney Hull

January 14, 1923 — April 7, 2012

W. DeLoney Hull, 89, of Decatur, Georgia, passed away on April 7, 2012. He was born on January 14, 1923 in Danville, Virginia. He graduated from Decatur Boys High and was attending Davidson College when World War II broke out. During the war, he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He commanded an LCT amphibious landing craft in the first wave of the invasion of Southern France and saw action in North Africa and Sicily. After the war, he remained in the U.S. Naval Reserve and attained the rank of Lt. Commander. He completed his college education at Emory University, where he earned both his undergraduate degree and a masters degree in journalism. After graduation, he entered the then-infant television industry at WSB-TV in Atlanta, where he spent some 30 years, first as a camera man, then as a director, producer and, finally, as a sales manager. He was a long-time member of the Decatur Rotary Club, serving as its president in 1976-77, and the Decatur Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and the Board of Directors of the Atlanta Better Business Bureau. He was an avid gardener and devoted family man. He was known for his unfailing sense of humor and ready smile. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Smith Hull of Decatur; his son, David W. Hull of Brussels, Belgium; his daughter, Leigh H. Steele and her husband, Michael D. Steele of Madison, Georgia; and his grandchildren, Michael Dane Steele Jr. of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Catherine DeLoney Steele of West Point, New York, and Emilia Hope Hull, of Brussels, Belgium. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Decatur Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Decatur Presbyterian Church, 205 Sycamore St., Decatur, GA 30030, The Decatur Preservation Alliance for Woodlands, 920 Scott Blvd., Decatur, GA 30030 or the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Ste. 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
