Eugenia (Genie) Wilkes Massingale

Eugenia (Genie) Wilkes Massingale passed away on May 22nd, 2026 at 4:00pm. Visitation and showing is scheduled at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur, GA 30033 for May 30th, 2026 from 10:00-11:00am followed by a Memorial Service in the Chapel at 11am. Interment will follow at Melwood Cemetery, 5170 E Ponce de Leon Ave. Stone Mountain, GA 30083. All who wish to attend are welcome.

Ada Eugenia Wilkes was born June 24, 1937, to Emmett Laurens Wilkes and Ada Rawlins Wilkes at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia. She attended Clairemont Elementary School and was a 1955 graduate of Decatur High School. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1959 with a degree in Home Economics (now Family and Consumer Sciences).

Genie married Kenneth Ray Massingale in 1959. They had one son Stephen Barry Massingale, who was born in 1960. Genie's parents had a house built and they moved into the house June 8, 1940. She and Ken bought the house from her mother after her father and her stepfather died. Ken and Genie were married over 58 years. Ken died November 30, 2017. Genie remained in the home until she passed away.

Genie was a Curved Bar Girl Scout and was a member and President (plus Region President) of the DeKalb County Jaycettes, She was a member of the Decatur Lioness Club, followed by membership in the Decatur Lions Club since February 1, 2004, where she served as President, Secretary and Treasurer, She served one year as Treasurer of the Atlanta Boy Choir where her son Stephen was a member of the choir.

Genie started working during Christmas and spring breaks from high school at Sears Roebuck. While she was attending college, she worked during school breaks at Frigidaire Sales Corp. where she met her future husband. After graduating from Georgia, she worked for the

Baptist Home Mission Board until 8 days before Stephen was born. After a year at home with Stephen, she worked as Office Manager for the American Dairy Association. Her next job was with Benefield Realty Company working for 18 years. Her final job for 18 years was as Executive Secretary of DeKalb County Purchasing and Contracting. She retired in 2017.

Genie started singing in church choirs when she was 3 years old, and she continued singing for the balance of her life, She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Decatur, most of her life where she sang in the Sanctuary Choir, She and Ken were members of Druid Hills Baptist Church from 1974 until 1991.

She was extremely proud of her son, Stephen, who is Worship Leader and Administrator at Nokomis Christian Fellowship, Nokomis Florida after starting and working 30 years in the Insurance Software business (Tropics Software, then sold to Insurity). Stephen and his wife Yoko have two children, Joshua Lee Massingale (wife Rachael Burr-Massingale) and Kristen Alexandra Massingale, all of whom were extremely special to her. They survive her, as well as her sister Laurie Wilkes Fountain (Jim) and nephews David Wilkes Fountain (Lynn) and Lee Walter Fountain, and niece Hannah Rose Fountain.

The family asks that memorial gifts be made to Lions Clubs International Foundation, Department 4547 Carol Stream, IL 60122-4547 USA OR the Choir Fund at First Baptist Church of Decatur, 308 Clairemont Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030, OR a charity of your choice.
