Benjamin "Ben" Franklin Christian Jr., 70, passed away on August 5, 2024, after tenaciously fighting stage 4 metastatic cancer. An Atlanta native, Ben was born on December 16, 1953, to Margaret "Peggy" and Benjamin Christian (Sr.). Raised around the corner from Lenox Square, Ben attended The Westminster Schools ('72) where he played football, wrestling, and baseball. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University ('76) and a Master's of Accounting from The Georgia Institute of Technology ('79). He began his career at The Coca-Cola Company before dedicating 37 years to Southern Company, where he worked in a variety of Financial Analysis & Planning roles.
Ben was a classic "Atlanta man" - a devoted Falcons, Georgia Tech, and Braves fan always with a Diet Coke in hand. His commitment to the Falcons was particularly notable, proudly holding season tickets for over 30 years. He grew up helping his father at the family office supply business located steps away from Centennial Olympic Park, which he later converted into a local sandwich shop during the 1996 Olympics.
Known for his humor, Ben had a knack for jokes and pranks, always trying to put a smile on someone's face. His motto in life was to be kind to others and his avenue to do this was to make others laugh.
A true jack-of-all-trades, he possessed a remarkable creativity and problem-solving ability to craft a solution for any challenge. Ben could fix anything you handed him, at least by the third try that is. His perseverance, artistic skillset, and intelligence allowed him to curate innovative designs and resolutions. Even back in High School, he summarized himself well choosing the Senior Quote, "Some men see things as they are and say, 'Why?' I dream things that never were and say, 'Why not?'". He was especially skilled at home upgrades and repairs - acting as the architect, general contractor, electrician, plumber, mechanic, and technology support along the way. One of Ben's favorite pastimes was spending time with his daughter, Emily, particularly because he loved working together to fix up her house whenever he got the chance.
Whether navigating the open waters on a boat, carving down snowy slopes on skis, swinging clubs on the golf course, riding a horse, or engaging in competitive tennis and football, Ben embraced each new experience with dedication and skill. A willingness for adventure often took him scuba diving in the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean and South Florida, where he reveled in the chance to dive alongside dolphins, manatees, and a vibrant array of marine life. His avid athleticism allowed him to excel in numerous sports and he later channeled this energy into coaching and guiding his daughter with his expertise and encouragement. He was a constant and enthusiastic presence at Emily's swim meets and tennis matches, always in the stands willing her on. "Never give up" and "hit 'em hard" were his consistent words of encouragement.
Undoubtedly an animal lover, Ben had a heart full of compassion for his furry companions. His life was graced by a beloved pack: Chloe, Charlie, Miley, Cassie, Brandy, Ginnie, Merle, Niña, Lucky, and Christy to name just a few. Each of these cherished pets held a special place in his heart. Ben's kindness extended far beyond his own animals; he could never pass by a stray without at least attempting to take them in. His generosity and empathy for animals knew no bounds. To Ben, his pets were not just animals but beloved family members and best friends, each one receiving the same care, affection, and devotion he would give to his closest companions.
Above all, Ben was a devoted father, a steadfast friend, and a lifelong Christian not only in name but also faith. His love for Emily was profound and unwavering; he was a pillar of support for her, always present during the most challenging times and celebrating her triumphs with genuine joy. Ben's friendships were a cornerstone of his existence; he maintained deep, enduring connections with a close-knit circle of friends throughout his life, each relationship a testament to his loyalty and kindness. His journey was a remarkable display of faith and resilience, facing life's ups and downs with a spirit that never wavered. Ben's sharp intellect and innovative thinking were complemented by a heart full of warmth and an infectious laugh that could brighten even the darkest days. His life was a beautiful blend of strength, compassion, and joy, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Benjamin Franklin Christian Jr. leaves a legacy that will forever brighten our lives. As we remember him, let's celebrate his vibrant spirit and the way he lived-with boundless kindness, unwavering courage, deep faith, and spontaneous humor. May his life inspire us to embrace every moment. Thank you, Ben, for sharing your light, your love, and your enduring impact.
