Carole Ivey Florence, 79, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the family she loved fiercely
and never let leave a room too quickly.
Born in Columbus and raised in Hapeville, Georgia, Carole lived a life defined by big love,
endless generosity, and an unmistakable flair for making every space around her a little brighter.
Carole met the love of her life, Jimmy Florence, at age 15. They shared a beautiful life together
as best friends and business partners for 63 years.
She was the loving sister of Joe Ivey (predeceased) and Billy Ivey, sister-in-law to Janet Gaskin,
and the adoring mother of sons Troy Florence (predeceased) (Jennifer), Ryan Florence (Sarah)
and Justin Florence (Maree), and daughters Robin Andrews-Smith (Mike) and Kelly Florence.
She was a cherished mother-in-law and Grandmommie to 12 grandchildren, who filled her home
with the noise, cheerful chaos, and a cacophony of conversation she loved more than almost
anything in this world. She is also survived by countless friends and family whose lives she
enlivened.
Carole showed up- always and fully. She loved with everything she had, decorated recklessly,
and lived a simple, joyful life. Perhaps her most profound talent as the matriarch of many was
rallying the tribe for any trip or family occasion.
She especially loved being together to rejoice on Christmas, watch a sunset, and feel the flow of
wind and waves on a boat in the Gulf. Together supporting Atlanta's culture by bringing anyone
and everyone to a live performance at the Alliance and Fox Theater, a new exhibit at Fernbank
Museum, and of course, together at her beloved Botanical Gardens.
A celebration of Carole's life will be held on August 25th from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the Chapel on
Sycamore, 318 Sycamore Street, Decatur, Georgia 30030. Please join us and raise a toast to
her enduring love of life.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions toward a lasting memorial to be created in
her honor, reflecting her unconditional love, whimsical spirit, and lasting legacy.
