Cecil A. Smith, Jr., age 75, passed away December 2, 2022, following a brief illness. He was born in Atlanta, GA, to the late Cecil and Martha Smith. Growing up in a minister's home, he was steeped in the Baptist faith.
Cecil graduated from Decatur High School and Georgia Tech; he was a lifelong Yellow Jacket fan. While he was in college, he proudly served his country in the National Guard and his service continued following his graduation.
After college, Cecil started his own business building houses, then moved to Houston, Texas, for several years, serving as Vice President of Operations at Texas Lightsteel Products, Inc. Upon returning to Georgia, he served as Director of Plant Operations at Clayton State University, and later as Division Manager for Cobb County's Office of Construction and Facilities Management.
Cecil's hobbies and interests included woodworking, reading, traveling, trading and restoring cars, watching NASCAR races, fishing, playing his guitar, riding his bike and landscaping; growing roses was his specialty. Cecil was the epitome of a southern gentleman; humble, hard-working, and resourceful, he could figure out solutions to complex problems and was a "Mr. Fix-it" of things big and small.
Cecil enjoyed serving and assisting those in need. He will be remembered as a wonderful son, husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. His kindness, generosity, dry wit, and tender heart will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his father and mother, Cecil was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maria, and his cherished daughter, Amy. He is survived by sisters, Melissa Osborne and Stephanie Johns, and brother Paul (Judy). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to one's favorite charity.
