Mr. Charles A. Nelson, Jr., age 76 of McDonough passed away April 14, 2026. Born in Atlanta, GA, he was the son of the late Charles A. Nelson, Sr. and Blanche Kilgore Nelson.
Charles received his Bachelor’s degree from Oglethorpe University. He then graduated from Atlanta Law School, receiving both a LL.B and LL.M degree. He then decided to follow his life long compassion and entered the funeral profession. He attended and graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta, receiving both an A.A. degree and Graduate of Funeral Service Diploma. Following his completion, he was awarded for receiving a perfect score on the National Board Exam.
Charles was a longtime Funeral Director serving many families with care and compassion in the Atlanta area at several funeral homes. For several years Charles was an instructor in Restorative Arts and Funeral Service Law at Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in Atlanta. Teaching the next generation was his passion. Charles was a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the Georgia Funeral Directors Association and the Academy of Graduate Embalmers of Georgia. Charles retired from A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, GA in May of 2016. In March 2023, Charles received the Service Award from the Georgia Academy of Graduate Embalmers for his dedication to funeral service.
Charles is survived by his wife of 47 years: Robin L. Nelson, his daughters: Lindsey (Kevin) McLain of McDonough and Katie (Ryan) Mondy of Locust Grove, grandchildren: Hayley McLain, Addi McLain, Millie McLain, Elisha Mondy and Matthew Mondy, his fur babies, Max and Mollie, cousins: Debbie Woodie, Gail Baize, Marvin Pewitt, Becky Buffington, George Palmer, Mary Alice Beard, Gloria Jean Flowers, Kathy McDonald, Mike Kilgore and Judy Stanley, and extended family members that he adored dearly.
Funeral Services will be held at 3 P.M. Sunday at the Chapel of Ford-Stewart Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Burgess officiating. The family will receive friends 1 P.M. until 3 P.M. prior to the service. A Graveside Service will be held at 11 A.M. Monday, April 20, 2026 at New Liberty United Methodist Church Cemetery in Braselton, GA.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to: Henry County Animal Care, Control and Shelter, 527 Hampton Road McDonough, GA 30253 on behalf of Charles A. Nelson, Jr.
