Clara Mae Smith

Clara was born on May 28, 1928, in Marietta, Georgia. She was the daughter of William Lewis Sanders and Mae Belle Taylor Sanders. Clara is survived by her daughter, Vicki Evans of Stone Mountain, four grandchildren; Brent Smith of Suwannee, Kellie Frazier of Alpharetta, Nicholas Smith of Florida and Christopher Smith of Florida. She is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren. Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband, Carson Smith, a son, Philip Smith, her sister, Mary Virginia Jones; and four brothers, Horace Sanders, Robert Sanders, Earl Sanders and James Sanders. Clara worked in various roles with DeKalb County government with her last assignment as a warrant unit clerk for the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department. Her longest and favorite job with the county was as a school crossing guard for the DeKalb County Police Department where she served for over 20 years. She filled that role at a time when there were not many women in law enforcement and Clara was among the first women to undergo official police training in order to qualify for crossing guard duty. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that people donate to their favorite charity in Clara's name.
