Listen to Obituary

Charles Maximilian Damace DeMarcay Waggoner passed away peacefully at Clairmont Place in Decatur, Georgia, on February 7, 2026, at the age of 73. The son of Julia DeMarcay Waggoner and Charles Lucius Waggoner, Damace was born on September 22, 1952, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He completed his schooling in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and worked in varied positions, from elevator operator to gardener, as a state employee in Jackson, Mississippi. After his retirement, he moved with his mother to Clairmont Place in 2011. While there he enjoyed activities ranging from poker games to bartending.

Damace had a lifelong passion for sports played at all levels, from high school to professional, but he had a special loyalty to the Auburn Tigers. He enjoyed attending sporting events, including the Atlanta Olympics. When viewing sports at home, he often kept careful records of scores and argued with the refs. Food was another source of pleasure for Damace, who often relished even those dishes that he claimed to dislike.

Damace's primary caregiver and companion for most of his life was his mother, who enabled him to live fully and joyfully by accommodating the special needs associated with his intellectual disability. Damace was devoted to his family, friends, colleagues, and caregivers; but his mother occupied a special place in his heart. In his later years, Damace and Julia were extremely fortunate that Elizabeth Obeng became their wise, dedicated, talented caregiver.

Surviving are Damace's mother Julia D. Waggoner of Decatur, brother Michael M. Waggoner of Decatur, brother Daniel F. Waggoner and sister-in-law Katharine D. Kennedy of Atlanta, and nephew Christian Waggoner of Rock Hill, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles L. Waggoner.

The family is deeply grateful to Damace's caregivers, Elizabeth Obeng, Mary Addo, Tsegab Awalom, Diana Obeng, and Vida Okai, for their skill, fortitude, and loyalty, especially during Damace's illness.

A service to celebrate Damace's life will take place at on March 7, 2026, at Clairmont Place, 2100 Clairmont Lake, Decatur, GA 30033.
