Obituary
David "Papi" DeLaney was a man who lived a life of resilience, hard work, and love. Born June 3, 1951, in Mechanicsville, Georgia, he grew up during a difficult time in American history and experienced hardships that shaped the man he became.
At 15, he marched during the Civil Rights Movement, and he later served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War era.
After returning home, Papi spent more than 30 years working as a concrete truck driver, helping build Atlanta while building a life for his family. He believed deeply in providing for the people he loved and making sure his child and grandchildren had opportunities he never had.
He was a devoted husband of 49 years, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. His granddaughter was his "road dog," and some of his favorite memories were the simple ones the family shared - hot chocolate, Walmart runs, naps, banana splits, and countless conversations.
Papi loved grilling, gardening, growing peppers for his special hot sauce, playing with the family dogs, and talking to just about anyone who would listen. He had a strong personality, a stronger will, and a heart that cared deeply even when he did not always know how to show it. He never met a stranger and always shared words of advice and little-known facts.,
His greatest accomplishment was not the buildings he helped construct, but the family and legacy he built. Papi spent his life learning how to survive.
In the end, he left behind something greater: a family who will carry his strength, his lessons, his stories, and his love forward.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Grace, his daughter Adriene, his granddaughter Jordan, his brother Michael (Edith) DeLaney, his special cousins Van Harris, Paulette Anderson, Paul (Cynthia) DeLaney, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins and all those whom he considered family.
He never gave up. And neither will we.....
