Listen to Obituary

Davis James "DJ" Southerland, Jr. passed away peacefully on Friday, October 3rd, surrounded by his loving family, while holding hands with his beloved wife, Marlene-affectionately known as Rocky. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose life was marked by love, integrity, and joy.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, to Jerry and Lucille Southerland, DJ was a gifted athlete who excelled in baseball. His talent led him to pitch for the minor league Jackson Generals in 1952 as part of the Kitty League.

DJ attended Memphis State University before being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Colorado. It was there he met the love of his life, Marlene Joan Rocco. They were married on April 21, 1957, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and shared 68 wonderful years together.

Following his military service, he built a successful career as a cotton broker, eventually founding and operating his own business until his retirement in 2005.

A proud Tennessee Volunteers fan, he could always be heard singing Rocky Top on game days. He was passionate about golf, cherished watching his grandchildren play sports, and loved family vacations. Known for his humor and unwavering dedication to those he loved, DJ brought laughter and light to every room he entered.

DJ is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene Southerland; his children: Linda Jones, David Southerland, Randy Southerland (Terri), Terri Southerland, and Susan Acklin (Tim); his grandchildren: John Crain, Corey Southerland, Tyler Southerland, Jordan Southerland, Kiernan Acklin, and Trey Acklin; and his great-granddaughter, Julia Southerland. He is also survived by his siblings: Hal Southerland, Patricia Clements, and Rita Standefer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Jerry Jean Tedder; and his first wife, Janice Spalding (Linda's mother).

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 15th at 2:00 PM at Turner & Sons Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a cause close to DJ's heart.

Davis James Southerland, Jr. lived a life of humility and integrity. His presence was a guiding light, and his memory will forever be a blessing. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know and love him.
