Dorothy was born on July 25, 1930 to the late Samuel Walker and Mary Arleavy Boyd Coats in Atlanta, Georgia. She attended Hoke Smith High School in Atlanta, Georgia, Class Of 1948, where she played trumpet in the marching band. She worked as a secretary for RCA Victor in Atlanta. In 1985 Dorothy began working for the Clayton County Police Department. While with Clayton County she trained as a Terminal Agency Operator, eventually becoming the Terminal Agency Operator Coordinator before retiring after 20 years of service.
On December 21, 1962, Dorothy married the love of her life, the late Charles Monroe Halleck at East Side Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia where both were members. Charles passed away in 1971.
Dorothy was a devout Christian. Her love for her family ran a close second to her love of God. Following close behind would be her love for Frank Sintra and George Strait. Movies were a life long passion and she especially loved seeing them at the Fox Theater. She passed that love onto her nieces who always knew a new Disney release was a guaranteed movie date! Dorothy had a great sense of adventure and was always up for a road trip. Holidays and birthdays were always celebrated with one of Dorothy's wonderful cakes - pound cake and German Chocolate were her specialties. Then there was the memorable incident of the coconut cake! She loved to bake for her family and friends. Dorothy became a one-woman morale booster for her nephew's military units overseas by baking, freezing, wrapping, boxing and mailing countless mini pound cakes. The men in those units looked forward to their buddy getting a box from "Aunt Dot."
Dorothy is survived by her nieces, Shirley Harrison of Monroe, Georgia, Sue (Joe) Fuller of Jasper, Georgia, Janet Coats Wilson of Toccoa, Georgia, Sandra Coats Thornburg of Phenix City, Alabama and nephew M. David Harvey of Huntsville, Alabama, five great nieces, two great nephews, and many great-great nieces and nephews. All of whom will miss her dearly.
In addition to her parents and husband Dorothy was predeceased by brothers, Samuel Everett Coats, Sr and Charles Derward Coats, nephew Samuel Everett Coats, Jr and niece Nancy Coats Harvey.
The Graveside Service for Dorothy Coats Halleck will be held on Monday April 13, 2026, at 11:30 am at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, 2284 Candler Road, Decatur, Georgia 30032. The Reverend John William Klein officiating.
