Dorothy (Dot) Young Hope, 96, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2023. She was a devoted wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and was known as Nana to all who loved and will greatly miss her.
Dot was born on July 15th, 1927, in Rome, GA to William Young and Mabel Clair Young. She was the fourth child of five. She moved to Atlanta in grammar school, lived with her mother and siblings on North Ave. and attended Girls' High where, rumor has it, she sang and performed in school productions. She met her future husband and love of her life, Gene Hope, through his best friend Billy Young, her brother, and they married in 1945.
Dot had her first child Bobby in 1946 and then came Dicky (Richard), Cathy and Buzzy (Gregory). After raising her children, Dot had a 27 year career working in the insurance industry as a Regional Supervisor for CNA Insurance, where she was known to be conscientious, hard-working and to have a great sense of fun!
Nana was always happiest when she was around her family. She cared for her mother for many years, and loved spending time with her sisters whether it was meeting for lunch at the mall, going to Birmingham for a visit, or even going on fun adventures to places like Atlantic City and New Orleans. And, she enjoyed hosting her children and grandchildren at her home for many years on Sunday afternoons and holidays. She was even fortunate enough to get to spend time with all six of her great-grandchildren and was so proud of each of them.
Nana was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Hope, her son, Gregory Hope, her daughter in law, Susan Hope, her parents and her four siblings. She is survived by her sons Bob Hope and Richard Hope (Sandra), her daughter Cathy Crock (Joe), her four grandchildren, Betsy Skarecky (Tod), Chris Crock (Mandy), Clair Wallace (Chad) and Casey Crock (Kristin) and her six great-grandchildren, Carter, Henry, Cameron, Clair, Lucy and Nate.
Nana was a kind, caring woman and will be missed by many. We will remember her life on October 28, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, GA. There will be a reception immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be given the Down syndrome Association of Atlanta, 2221 Peachtree Road
