Dr. Cathie Breeding Sowles, a beacon of optimism, selflessness, and kindness, died on September 21, 2023, in Atlanta, Georgia. Born on June 23, 1945, in Texarkana, Arkansas, she spent her early childhood in her beloved town of Grundy, Virginia. Cathie's radiant spirit and enduring kindness touched countless lives throughout her 78 years.
Cathie, a proud alumnus of Central High School in Memphis, Tennessee, always had a keen interest in the human mind. This fascination led her to pursue a bachelor's degree in Psychology at Memphis State University. Her passion for psychology was insatiable, and she furthered her education by earning a Master's and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology/Psychotherapy at Georgia State University.
Her professional journey was as impressive as her educational pursuits. Cathie served the community in various capacities, dedicating her life to the service of others. She worked at the Fulton County Department of Family and Children's Services, Gwinnett Mental Health in Lawrenceville and Norcross, Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale, Ga, Clayton Mental Health, Appalachian Regional Healthcare in Hazard, Ky, Cobb County Community Services Board, and Fulton County Court.
Cathie's work went beyond the corridors of these institutions. She was a pillar of strength for her patients, guiding them through their darkest hours with a warm smile and a compassionate heart. She was a firm believer in the healing power of empathy and kindness, principles that she instilled in her daughter, Cindy Sowles, who survives her.
Despite her demanding career, Cathie always found time for her interests. Her greatest joy was caring for her rescue pets and feeding feral cats. Her love for animals was an extension of her kind and selfless nature. It was a testament to her belief that every life, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, is worth love and care.
In the face of her battle with Metastatic Breast Cancer, Cathie remained the personification of optimism. Her strength and resilience were an inspiration to all who knew her, encouraging them to face their challenges with courage and positivity.
Dr. Cathie Breeding Sowles leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and service. Her life was a testament to the power of empathy and the impact one person can have on the lives of many. As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate her life, cherishing the memories and lessons she left behind. Her spirit lives on in every life she touched, every person she helped, and every heart she warmed with her kindness.
In the words of Dr. Cathie Breeding Sowles, "Every day is a gift, and it's up to us to make it count." As we remember her, let us carry these words in our hearts, living each day with gratitude, kindness, and optimism, just as she did.
