E. Lee Southwell III
April 15, 1950 – August 11, 2022
E. Lee Southwell III passed away at his home on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at the
age of 72. Lee was a long-time resident of Atlanta, GA.
He was born in Jacksonville, Florida, to Elmer Lee and Patricia Ann (Moon)
Southwell on April 15, 1950. Lee married Louisa Jane Winters Calvery in Atlanta,
Georgia, on June 13, 1992. Lee is survived by his wife, Louisa, his step-son, Kim
Calvery (Mandy), his mother, Pat Southwell, his sister Marymoon Allison
(Chuck), his brother, Jim Southwell (Kim), 8 nieces and nephews, several great
nieces and nephews, several cousins and many close friends. Lee is predeceased
by his father, E. Lee Southwell, Jr.
Lee spent most of his early life in Hamlet, NC, where he graduated from Hamlet
High School. Afterwards, he graduated from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in
NC, and subsequently graduated from the Walter F. George School of Law, Mercer
University in Macon, GA. Lee worked for many years as Chief Staff Attorney for
the Georgia State Board of Workers’ Compensation, where he served a very
distinguished career. He was from the old school, trained by former directors, Earl
Mallard and Don Knowles. He was an authority on Georgia workers’
compensation law and was frequently called on for his expertise by lawyers and
judges across the state. His practice manual was published annually by the State
Board and valued for its conciseness.
Lee will be remembered most for his keen sense of humor, his exceptional
intelligence, his warmth, and his impressive ability to remember case names,
holdings, citations, phone numbers, baseball statistics, and pretty much everything.
He was an avid sports fan, especially of the Atlanta Braves, and he dearly loved his
family and many friends, his guide dogs, and a good meal in the company of
friends.
Services will be held at A.S. Turner & Sons, 2773 North Decatur Rd, Decatur, GA
30033 on Saturday August 20, 2022, at 2:00 pm. A celebration of Lee’s life at
Manuel’s Tavern will follow on a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers,
the family requests donations in Lee’s memory to the Foundation Fighting
Blindness (fightingblindness.org), or to Leader Dogs for the Blind (leaderdog.org),
