Newcott, Edward M.
Edward M. Newcott, 95, died peacefully at his home in Sunrise of Decatur, GA July 9, 2013. Born in Peckville, PA in 1918, he was one of nine children of a Lithuanian immigrant coal miner. Moving to New York shortly before World War II, he enlisted in the Coast Guard and served in the Lower Manhattan Barge Office and aboard the SS Monticello, a troop transport ship. Educated at Pratt Institute, thanks to the GI Bill, he became a successful pumping engineer, providing expertise on projects ranging from the irrigation of Israel and water management in Florida's Everglades in the 1950s to the construction of the World Trade Center in 1970. He was a member of Catholic War Veterans Post 261 in Dumont, NJ and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6082 in Peckville, PA. In 1944 he married Rosemary Kelly, who predeceased him in 1980. He is survived by his five children, Edward Newcott of Pembrook, NH; Rosemary Newcott-Marquardt of Stone Mountain,GA; Bill Newcott of Lewes, DE; Mary Lou Newcott-Oechsner of Avondale Estates, GA and Martin Newcott of San Diego, CA. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. In 1982 he married Betty Oakley of North Tonawanda, NY, who predeceased him in 2010. A memorial service will be held 1:00 pm, Wednesday, July 17 at St. Thomas More RC Church in Decatur, GA with interment to follow at a later date in Peckville, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to The Monastery of the Holy Spirit, 2625 Highway 212 SW, Conyers, GA 30094 in Edward Martin Newcott's name. A.S.
