Edward "Ed" O'Connor, 79, passed away on July 29, 2026, in Atlanta, Georgia, at Emory Hospice after a courageous ten‑year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Born on September 24, 1946, in Fort Lee, Virginia, Ed was the son of Edward and Marian O'Connor.
Ed graduated from Saint Joseph High School in 1964 and continued his education at a military preparatory school in Virginia before entering West Point. After a year at the Academy, he redirected his path to Georgia Tech, where he earned a B.S. in Industrial Management in 1969. He began his professional career with The Monsanto Company before pursuing his passion for the law. Ed earned his law degree from Emory University and went on to practice as an attorney from 1974 until his retirement in 2016.
During his years at Georgia Tech, Ed became a proud member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, forming lifelong friendships that remained a cherished part of his life. On March 17, 2001, he married Julie Cobb in Decatur, Georgia, beginning a partnership filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion.
Ed never met a stranger. A natural conversationalist, he delighted in learning from others, sharing stories, and offering thoughtful advice. His curiosity, warmth, and generosity of spirit made him unforgettable to all who crossed his path.
Ed's love of the outdoors and travel shaped many of his happiest years with Julie. Together they wandered through countless corners of the United States and across the globe, embracing new landscapes, new flavors, and the new friends who enriched their lives.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife, Julie Cobb of Decatur; his siblings Dan O'Connor (Renee), Marge O'Connor, and Richard O'Connor (Tanya); nieces and nephews Danielle (Alex), Patrick (Kristen), Carson, and Chris (Jenna); great‑nephews Colin, Nolan, Cooper; and the anticipated arrival of Baby Oden in September. Julie's family also held a special and enduring place in his heart.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Marian O'Connor; his older sister, Kathy O'Connor; and his younger brother, Bob O'Connor.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 23rd, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at A.S. Turner & Sons, Decatur, GA
Ed's life was defined by curiosity, kindness, and connection. His legacy lives on in the many people he loved, encouraged, and inspired.
