Fletcher, Fred Gerald, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son
and brother, passed away in Fayetteville, Ga. on Wednesday, Feb. 8,
2023 at the age of 92. Fred was born on January 12, 1931, in Carroll
County, Ga, to the late Grady Franklin Fletcher and Grace Camp Fletcher.
He attended Tech High and O'Keefe High School in
Atlanta, and proudly served in the United States Navy, active duty and
reserves. He attended Georgia State University and graduated in
1959 with a B.A. degree in Business Administration. Fred worked for the City of
Atlanta in the finance department, worked briefly for Shell Oil in New
Orleans, then continued to work for the City of Atlanta until his
retirement, as the Director of the Bureau of Airport Administration and
Planning at Hartsfield International Airport, under Mayor Maynard
Jackson.
During his retirement years, Fred worked for two local beverage
distributorships and later, earned his real estate license, working with
commercial real estate companies and in residential real estate with
Karofotias Realty. He served as Deacon Chairman at Clairmont Hills
Baptist Church (now Bridgepoint Church at Toco Hills) and served for
many years as an enthusiastic volunteer, helping in the kitchen and
attending mission trips.
Fred met the love of his life, Betty Jo Payne, in 1945, and they
married on Nov. 3, 1950, at the Baptist Tabernacle in Atlanta. Fred
loved his family and friends dearly and valued time together,
organizing golf days with buddies, barbecued ribs dinners with his
siblings, and nights playing cards with other couples.
He and Betty were ardent collectors of antiques and traveled the
backroads, seeking the next refinishing project. Fred never met a
stranger and spoke to nearly everyone in his path. He loved to share a
story, pray for a hurt or listen to a tale and he admired a well-planned
prank. Fred was a good, good friend to many.
He will be remembered as smart and witty, caring and wise, and a
true lover of people, American History, and his Christian faith. And let it
be known, no one has driven a cut-through on the back roads of old
Atlanta with more expertise. Fred Fletcher leaves an irreplaceable
void in the hearts of those who knew him. In addition to his wife, Betty,
and two children Jody Kitchen and Dana Chitwood (Dirk), Fred is
survived by his Grandchildren, Beau Fulton (Sharilyn), Anna Fulton
Kemp (Ross), Alex Kitchen and Sarah Kitchen; brother Buddy Fletcher
(Marsha); his sister Barbara Sue Haller; many nephews and nieces;
and more friends and colleagues than one could count.
