Listen to Obituary

George Daniel Bullock (83) of Decatur, GA passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026 surrounded by his loving family, after a recent fall. He was born on December 19, 1942 to Jane Cottrell Bullock and Harry Bullock in San Francisco, CA. He grew up in Portland, OR and went to Lincoln High School. He attended Portland State University, where he played baseball on the team that advanced to the National Championship in 1962.

He started a PhD program in history at Stanford University, where he met his wife, Mary Brown Bullock, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage. George taught history at Southern Methodist University and the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, before moving to Washington, DC where he joined the staff of Senator Ted Stevens as his Administrative Assistant. He later served in the Nixon administration's Office of Economic Opportunity in the Executive Office of the President.

George then worked in DC representing the State of Washington, Pacific Northwest Regional Commission, and State of Wisconsin. He later started his own firm, Bullock & Associates, and worked on government affairs for several private companies before joining the Edison Electric Institute, where he was responsible for state and local relations. When Mary became President of Agnes Scott College, George continued his work with electric utilities, particularly The Southern Company, Georgia Power, and the Southern States Energy Board.

He was also an outstanding "first husband" at Agnes Scott, where he learned the names of each student and was the "cheerleader in chief," frequently attending Scottie sporting events, drama productions, music events, and other programs to support the students.

George was an incredibly attentive and supportive husband and father. When he learned there were no opportunities for his son, Graham, and his daughter, Ashley, to play baseball or softball in DC, he created an entirely new baseball and softball league - Capital City Little League - for them to play in. He ran the league, coached their teams, and taught them how to play the game. He also deeply loved the family's dogs - Petey, Chena, and Juneau.

George had a deep passion for learning. While his first love was history (American history, British history, and European history were his specialties), he also had a deep appreciation for art and music. He possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of both sports history (especially baseball) and American politics (especially the executive and legislative branches).

Travel was also one of George's great loves. He visited India, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Egypt, and many other countries on behalf of the United States Information Service in the 1980s. He also traveled extensively with Mary, Graham, and Ashley around the world. George had a particularly strong interest in Latin America, and went on some wonderful trips to Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, and elsewhere in South America. Throughout his travels, he loved to collect local artwork and handicrafts, and his collection, together with his enormous library of books, reflects the depth and breadth of his eclectic interests.

George also loved good food, classic movies, fun games, and challenging jigsaw puzzles. He leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, generosity, and love that will continue to shape the lives of those who knew him - and the thousands of kids who have played in Capital City Little League! He was a caring husband, loving father, and loyal friend, and he will be deeply missed.

George is survived by his sister Kathleen Labrador; his wife Mary Bullock; his son, Graham Bullock and daughter-in-law Sally Bullock; his daughter Ashley Bullock and son-in-law Brian Sherman; and his four grandsons, Asher, Calvin, Jordan, and Thompson.

A memorial service will be held at Agnes Scott College's Julia Thompson Smith Chapel on April 12 at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Agnes Scott College in honor of George Bullock.
