Gordon E. Tuttle, Sr. (September 28, 1935 - December 19, 2023)
On December 19, 2023, Gordon E. Tuttle, Sr., age 88, died peacefully with his family by his side in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a husband, father, and businessman who was known for his independent spirit, integrity in business and life, decent and good nature, and tender devotion to family.
Gordon's life was well lived. He was born and grew up in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. After graduating from St. Bernard's School and Mt. Lebanon High School, Gordon attended the University of Dayton where he earned a BA in business administration. After completing college, he served as an ensign in the US Navy pre-flight program, and married Dolores "Dolly" Berry in 1958.
In his profession, Gordon worked in the building business and became an integral part of the development and growth of The Ryland Group, a national homebuilding company. From 1967 - 1974, he participated in the expansion of operations in the mid-Atlantic, Northeast, Midwest and Southeast. In 1970, he was appointed vice-president of the Ryland Homes single family division of the company.
In 1975, Gordon harnessed his entrepreneurial spirit and struck out on his own as an independent homebuilder in metropolitan Atlanta. Mirroring the growth of the Atlanta northern suburbs in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990s, he built homes in Dunwoody, Roswell Alpharetta and Cumming, Georgia. Gordon enjoyed his work tremendously, was sought after as a mentor for homebuilders entering the field and retired to Dawsonville, Georgia in 2005.
Outside of his profession, Gordon was generous with his talents and time. He served as president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Jude the Apostle Church in Sandy Springs, Georgia, and received the Leo J. Zuber Award from Birthright Inc, acknowledging his work building an expansion of the Atlanta office.
More than his career or charitable work, Gordon loved and cherished his family. He was a devoted family man and good provider who took great delight in the happiness of his beloved wife of 65 years Dolly, son Gordon Jr., daughter Ann, and his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.
Gordon was preceded in death by his parents Beila Tuttle and Florence Barlow Tuttle and sisters Jackie, Lucille and Janet. He is survived by his wife Dolly of Dawsonville, Georgia, Gordon Jr, (Hal Rogers) of Atlanta, Georgia, Ann Tuttle Cashin (Chip) of Ponte Verde, Florida, and grandchildren Cody, Kylie and Katie Cashin.
